Texas Towns Named ‘Cut and Shoot’ and ‘No Trees’: Unusual Names with Unique Stories

Exploring Texas Towns with Unusual Names: Cut and Shoot and No Trees

We live in the State of Texas in the United States. Just like most states and countries, Texas is brimming with unique and intriguing town names. Two of my absolute favorites come from this diverse state: Cut and Shoot, and No Trees.

Imagining Texas

Before we delve into these fascinating town names, let's take a moment to picture the image most people conjure when thinking about Texas. Cowboys, cacti, desert landscapes, horses, guns, and spurs might come to mind. These are the typical—and often Hollywoodized—images of Texas that are widely recognized, especially by those who have never set foot in the state or are foreigners.

Discovering Cut and Shoot, Texas

Now let's move on to the first town name: Cut and Shoot, Texas. Yes, you read that right! It is a real place just north of Houston. This small community is currently being absorbed by the expanding areas of Houston and Conroe. Interestingly, many people choose to live there just for the privilege of being part of Cut and Shoot. How Texan can you get?

No Trees, Texas: A Desert Oasis with a Curious Naming

Our second unusual town name is No Trees, Texas, located in the desert region between Odessa and Kermit in West Texas. The story behind its name is as curious as the place itself. Back in the 1800s, the U.S. government needed a post office there, as the town had enough population and businesses to justify one. The local general store owner, and likely the postmaster, was asked to come up with a name for the community.

Legend has it that after much contemplation, he looked outside and said something like, 'There are no trees, so No Trees will do.' Fast-forward to today, and the community has changed. Still, it retains its original name despite the lack of trees. Nowadays, No Trees has at most four to five houses or buildings, and most of them are abandoned. Much like the name suggests, it is indeed a town without trees.
