North IndianExplorers Journey to South Indian Delights: A Personal Tale

North Indian Explorer's Journey to South Indian Delights: A Personal Tale

As a resident of the North, my culinary experiences often center around the rich, hearty cuisine of my own region. However, my journey to South Indian food has been nothing short of a delightful discovery, filled with flavors that have left me craving more.

From Hyderabad Biryani to Chilli Paratha: An Unforgettable Experience

Back in the day, when I ventured to the bustling city of Hyderabad, my friend introduced me to a restaurant renowned for its delectable biryani. Despite my vegan preferences, I was intrigued by the reputation of this establishment and decided to give it a try.

As the spicy and aromatic biryani hit my taste buds, I was struck by its exceptional quality. The masala curry that accompanied it only added to the feast. Before I knew it, I had polished off a whole bowl, leaving my companion still tackling half of his. This experience was so memorable that I couldn't stop after just one serving.

Interestingly, while sharing this experience with Google, I found myself still engrossed in the meal until every last grain had been consumed, the platter miraculously clean.

Idiyappam: A Daily Desi Delight

The Idiyappam, also known as String Hoppers or Nool Puttu, is a staple in my household now. My mother-in-law used to prepare it regularly for my husband when he was a child. It's a simple yet delicious dish made from rice flour, salt, oil, and hot water. The Idiyappam maker is a crucial tool for this process, making the texture light and fluffy.

Idiyappam fundamentally tastes like seviyan or sevai. Traditionally, a sweet breakfast would involve enjoying it with coconut milk, sugar, or jaggery. However, as a vegan, I often substitute with coconut milk or nut-based milks to suit my dietary needs.

Wheat Puttu: A Familiar Yet Comforting Dish

Another dish that has found its way into my regular repertoire is Wheat Puttu. If you ever visit my in-laws, you'll see this dish as a must-have. Made from wheat flour, it's often stuffed with coconut and jaggery, and it's quite filling, making it ideal for a hearty breakfast. It's the perfect choice when you need something substantial to start your day.

Set Dosa and Chilli Paratha: Versatile and Filling Dishes

When I tire of the usual Dosa variations—Masala Podi, Panner, you name it—Set Dosa offers a satisfying alternative. It comes in a set of three and is a fantastic option if you're in the mood for something changeable yet filling. Unlike a regular Dosa, the Chilli Paratha is a family favorite, a combination of chopped paratha sauce and spices that seem to transport us back to childhood. It's spiced to the teeth, making it a delightful choice for those who love a kick in their food.

Chilli Paratha: A Signing Off Note

My journey through South Indian cuisine wouldn't be complete without mentioning the Chilli Paratha. At my mother-in-law's gatherings, my husband and I simply can't resist it, much like our days as children indulging in cotton candy. This dish, a sizzling blend of spices and chopped paratha sauce, is perfectly balanced by a creamy side dish akin to raita, often prepared in aManchurian style.

Further Explorations: Paddu and Kothu Parotta

While exploring the labyrinth of South Indian delights, I've also sampled other dishes like Paddu, which is a snack made from fermented batter of rice and lentils. Similar to Paniyarams or Guliyappas, Paddu is a popular snack in South India, particularly in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. When paired with a dose of Chutney, it makes for a satisfying meal.

A banana leaf kothu parotta is another delightful find. Originating in Tirunelveli and using maida or refined flour rather than wheat, it's a comforting choice stuffed with chicken or vegetables, spices, and herbs. This dish is best enjoyed hot off the griddle, adding a new layer to my exploration of South Indian cuisine.

My love for South Indian food is a story of discovery, taste, and joy. It's a journey that I'll always cherish, and I hope that by sharing my experiences, others might embark on their own exploration of this incredible cuisine.
