My Love Affair with Portuguese Cuisine: From Skepticism to Enthusiasm

My Love Affair with Portuguese Cuisine: From Skepticism to Enthusiasm

I must admit, when it comes to Portuguese cuisine, my initial reaction was far from enthusiasm. After all, who among us can genuinely enjoy fish fat, over-seasoned dishes? But as my exploration of this culinary landscape unfolded, what I thought would be a mere detestable experience turned into an unexpected love affair.

Initial Skepticism

To start, I was anything but a fan of Portuguese cuisine. Fish fat, over-the-top seasoning, and a general sense of heaviness characterized my first few encounters. These experiences left me deeply skeptical, but as I delved deeper, I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity, flavor, and the sheer joy of eating Portuguese food.

A Revelation with Bacalhau Assado

Bacalhau assado, or baked cod, was a turning point for me. The version I had was not just any dish; it was a revelation. Ordered in Lisbon, the large pan was so generous that I felt a little overwhelmed. But the moment I took the first bite, all my reservations melted away. The combination of potatoes, olives, and an incredible amount of olive oil (more than what was evidenced in the picture) was simply divine. I was left with a lingering, delicious taste. Paired with some excellent Vinho Verde, the meal was nothing short of incredible.

Novelties in Portuguese Cuisine

Another memorable dish was a pork and clam concoction. People would often question my interest in such a combination, but the dish proved to be an incredible delight. Even after years, I still think about that exquisite meal. Sadly, the local Portuguese restaurant that served the dish has since closed, but the memory remains.

Deliciousness of Polvo à Lagareiro

Polvo à Lagareiro (Baked Octopus with Olive Oil) was another delightful surprise. This simple dish comprises boiled octopus pan-fried in olive oil and served with baked potatoes, usually "batatas a murro," a type of mashed potato. The addition of spinach or other leafy greens, cooked with olive oil and garlic, makes this dish a true delight. Previously, I would have never thought to pair octopus with potatoes, but this dish changed my perspective entirely.

Exploring Portuguese Cuisine Across the Globe

Even in touristy restaurants, the food in Portugal consistently surprised me. A fantastic meal in the Ironbound District of Newark, NJ, at a Portuguese restaurant was a high point, as was my attempt to grill sardines on a boat in Olho.

Portugal’s Culinary Legacy

Portugal’s cuisine has become one of my greatest revelations in life. From the humble yet exquisite Polvo à Lagareiro to the hearty Bacalhau assado, every dish offers a unique and delightful experience. The simplicity of some dishes masks a depth of flavor that truly shines through. Even in tourist-heavy areas, the food quality is consistently impressive, and this speaks volumes about the authenticity and sincerity of Portuguese culinary traditions.

For anyone who shares my initial skepticism or simply wishes to expand their culinary horizons, diving into Portuguese cuisine might just prove to be a delightful journey.
