Insights from a Frequent Guest: Tips for Hosting with Grace
As a regular guest, there are several aspects of my staying that could be improved, based on my unique needs and preferences. In this article, I will outline some specific requests and tips for hosts to ensure a more comfortable and respectful visit experience for everyone involved.
Providing a Safe and Comfortable Stay
One frequent issue I encounter is the handling of luggage and security codes during visits. For example, during the Christmas holidays, I hosted a guest who insisted on using my door security code to retrieve their luggage, despite my preference to leave it in an adjacent empty unit where I could safely store a key under the mat. My guest’s refusal to respect my initial and repeated requests to consider my safety concerns deeply upset me. Given my husband recently transitioned a few months ago, I felt a heightened need for safety and security in my home alone for the first time in 68 years. Unfortunately, this guest perceived my safety needs as a nuisance instead of a reasonable request.
Understanding Guest Preferences and Needs
Here are a few more aspects of my stays that fall short of what I truly need and appreciate:
Customized Meals and Seating
Many hosts make a special dish to accommodate my need for vegetarian and non-poultry meals. However, it would be even more considerate if hosts could ensure that I don’t sit next to people I don’t particularly enjoy company with and that the quality of the catered food is good. Additionally, serving food too late in the evening can be a big letdown, especially if I have a packed travel schedule and need to keep a clear head.
Comfort and Convenience
When staying in someone’s home, several little luxuries can significantly enhance comfort and convenience:
Table Fans in Bedrooms: If there is no ceiling fan, a table fan in the bedroom is a great comfort, especially in warmer climates where the room can become stuffy. The white noise it provides can also be quite soothing and helpful. Lint Rollers: If you have pets, I may not want pet fur on my clothes before heading out for the day. Leave a lint roller for me to use whenever the need arises.Offering me some 'me-time' is also essential. Travel can be stressful, and having a chance to unwind can help me relax. While I love visiting, the thought of asking for alone time can make me feel guilty. Therefore, I kindly request that you offer me some private time at the end of the day to decompress and gather my thoughts. This will help me feel more relaxed and ready for the next day.
Respecting My Professional Life
Another aspect that often needs attention is my need for some personal space and time to work or catch up on urgent tasks. Running my own business, I often need to manage emails and other urgent tasks while I’m traveling. Allowing me some quiet time to focus can significantly increase my productivity. Asking me to work while you visit can be incredibly counterproductive and counterintuitive.
Some hosts might assume I need to spend every waking moment socializing or being entertained, but this is not always the case. Consider extending invitations and showing respect by making it clear that you are offering me the option for some alone time, rather than expecting me to constantly be engaged in social activities.
Conclusion
Hosting a guest can be challenging, but if hosts take my preferences and needs into account, it can be a pleasant and positive experience for everyone involved. Whether it comes to safety, comfort, convenience, or professional needs, being mindful and understanding can go a long way in creating a memorable stay.
